Georgetown University’s rapidly growing School of Continuing Studies elected to consolidate their off-campus programs into a single location in downtown Washington, DC. STUDIOS guided Georgetown with an extensive site search which resulted in the decision to take over a large space in a commercial office building that was formerly occupied by a television studio. The program includes a variety of classrooms and offices.
The building’s unusual spaces allowed STUDIOS to interject a four-story atrium with a central communicating stair that serves as a central link to all classrooms and offices. To create a stronger entry and to link the inside / outside spaces, STUDIOS developed extensive base building modifications which allow daylight into the building – STUDIOS replaced the windowless facade with a two-story glass curtainwall that gives Georgetown an instant presence in the neighborhood.
STUDIOS also designed the conversion of a large studio into a tiered auditorium that can be used as a classroom, lecture hall, or meeting space. To accommodate additional programmatic needs, the project includes specialized spaces such as an alumni center, faculty rooms and study spaces.
