The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the largest state-owned commercial bank in China and tenth largest bank in the world, asked STUDIOS to design its branch and regional senior offices in the new Pudong district of Shanghai, the financial center of China. They also wished to promote the work of local craftspeople and artists because of their role in fostering China’s economy and intellectual currency. To accomplish this goal, STUDIOS’ design melds the classic coinage of modern design to the bank’s institutional identity.
STUDIOS reinforced the international modern aesthetic that prizes integrated design over dissimilar external and internal spaces by carrying the exterior’s material palette of glass, stainless steel, and stone into many interior areas. The interplay of Western ideas with Asian form and materials enriches the design and symbolizes the bank.
