One of the largest scientific and educational institutions in the world, The National Geographic Society (NGS) has been inspiring people to care about the planet since 1888. NGS owns three adjacent buildings of varying age in downtown Washington, DC which house their nearly 2,000 employees. STUDIOS was tasked with consolidating the Nat Geo Media Group (including Magazine Group, Website, Graphics, Photography, Art/Design and Production) into a single location that met their workplace needs while providing the flexibility to grow and evolve over time. The project is also being used as a prototype to develop NGS’ workplace standards to inform an entire campus transformation to a more open, collaborative media and publishing company.
Following a Vision and Programming phase, STUDIOS “test fit” the Media Group into several options within the three buildings, ultimately selecting the space that responded to their unique program functions.
A new glass bridge joins the M Street building to the 16th Street building in order to allow more connectivity and more natural light into internal spaces.
