STUDIOS was commissioned by the Nysmith School for the Gifted to design and implement a strategic plan for the expansion of the existing school. The addition houses the junior high school, and includes Arts and Sciences, Classroom and Multipurpose wings.
The triangular space at the center of the new wings forms a two-story communal area for larger gatherings and assemblies. Natural light streams into this enclosed space through a band of clerestory windows and a large skylight punched into the roof. A theatrical stage/stair grants access to the second floor classrooms and activates the interior space.
Full glass accent walls in the multipurpose and art rooms, as well as the etched glass panels that double as dry-erase blackboards in the classrooms, help to create a light and open learning atmosphere.
The master plan also revises the existing entry sequence, parking, and student drop-off areas, and provides for additional expansion for future growth.
