STUDIOS was chosen by Stone & Youngberg, an investment banking firm, to develop their headquarters within San Francisco’s historic Ferry Building. The design emphasizes the theatrical nature of the space by placing most of the company’s operations on view. Open-plan trading areas and office zones appear as distinct entities that “float” within the vast space.

The Ferry Building is a National Register landmark, and any new construction must be removable without damaging the original structure. To meet these requirements, STUDIOS created a series of “parabuildings” within the existing structure to house conference rooms and private offices. Wood wall panels, railings, counters and other elements were incorporated into the design to complement the original stone and steel features, and bring warmth to the space.

The two-level lobby and conferencing area juxtaposes modern forms with the building’s historic fabric and systems. A custom curved ceiling is suspended over the trading floor, improving acoustics and drawing focus to the heart of the company.
