STUDIOS designed a long-range master plan and design documents to renovate and seismically retrofit UCSB’s two-story Arts Building, originally built in 1957. The Arts Building houses the industrial arts program, which includes fine art and industrial shop classes, as well as the University Art Museum.

The scope of work included seismic improvements, building system and finish upgrades, as well as the addition of three glass-enclosed exhibit rooms, totaling about 800 sf.

The key challenge for this project was to address the needs of many interested parties within a limited budget. The vast majority of the project funding was allotted to seismic work and upgrades; in response, we developed an efficient and creative approach to make the most out of our resources and budget. We prioritized and addressed the most highly desirable program enhancements – such as improving the art studios and collaboration areas – by replacing windows and exposing ceilings to provide more open, light-filled spaces. We also improved indoor/outdoor connections and views.
