Discovering Architecture with Future Leaders

DATEFebruary 14, 2020

LOCATIONNew York, NY

As members of the Partnership of New York City and other cultural institutions across the county, STUDIOS is always eager to use our diverse skillset to support these organizations. Career Discovery Week, organized by The Partnership for New York City and New York City’s Department of Education, was a chance to do just that by taking part in this momentous event that matched 6,000 students with over 180 companies who were ready to share their industry knowledge.

As one of the only design firms in the Partnership, STUDIOS was lucky enough to host a group of 10th graders from the Williamsburg School of Architecture and Design. We introduced the students to who we are, what we do, and how we do it and then we got to jump into a design charrette (what we all came for!). Group leaders guided the students through designing a pavilion at the waterfront in Williamsburg--sparking them to wonder what they would want to see in their neighborhood and how it would aesthetically fit into the surrounding context. The day culminated with sketching and model building (the students getting creative, using their cardboard lunch boxes as model materials) and getting a chance to talk through their design with STUDIOS’ principals.

"Career Discovery Week is a milestone opportunity for the diverse organizations represented by the Partnership to educate and immerse future leaders in the variety of career paths. As architects and designers, we are dedicated to introducing the next generation to the successes they can find pursuing career opportunities in the design field; to open their eyes to possibilities or spark a passion,"

Todd DeGarmo, CEO and Principal of STUDIOS architecture
