The owners of Clay wanted to create a new kind of fitness center, one that focused on service and design, and emphasized members’ comfort in a trainer-friendly environment. Clay is located near Union Square in Manhattan, on the second floor of a 1930s building that once housed a furniture showroom. To attract a select clientele seeking the highest standards in a fitness facility, STUDIOS produced a design with a fresh palette and refined materials for Clay’s sophisticated downtown members. The space is visually simple and elegant: technological requirements, lighting and mechanical systems are concealed from view. A fireplace lounge near the entry, a secluded unisex lounge by the locker area, and a rooftop deck provide varied spaces for clients to relax between workouts. Upscale design and a high level of attention to member services mark Clay as the premier facility of its kind in the competitive world of fitness training and health.
