Partnering with CulturalDC, STUDIOS designed the new Space4: Art mobile exhibit to support the not-for-profit’s mission to “make space for art.” This new mobile art gallery is designed to showcase new and emerging artists in a different ward throughout the District every four weeks.
The art gallery converts an existing 40-foot-long storage container into a traveling forum for public art and community engagement. With limited time and budget, the design team sought to turn the shipping container into a mobile beacon of arts and culture. To draw an audience, the exterior was painted a lively shade of teal, wrapped in a new skin of perforated metal panels, and then back-lit to create a soft, inviting glow. The CulturalDC logo and the Space4: Art initiative sponsors feature prominently on one side of the container while the opposite side features an aerial view of Washington, DC, that stretches along the length of the container.
The first stop on the tour was the front lawn of District Winery—an urban winery and restaurant—located at The Yards (Ward 6). The southeast quadrant of the city has seen enormous and rapid redevelopment within the past few years, making it the perfect setting to kick-off CulturalDC’s art initiative. Over 1,000 people were in attendance. The mobile gallery is slated to visit each of the District’s wards with a new artist throughout 2017 and 2018.
