Edmunds.com, a leading online car-buying guide and information center, hired STUDIOS to design their 90,000-square-foot headquarters. The office functions as an urban campus with 350 employees spread over three floors, linked by a central connecting stair.
The overall concept for this space was the creation of motion, like the streaks of light from passing cars speeding along a busy highway. The inspiration for the design was derived from the automotive form, Sunset Boulevard, and photos of highways at dusk. The color choices came directly from the automotive industry, incorporating Ferrari Red, Lamborghini Orange, Ford Aqua, and Mercedes Silver, and other elements such as tail lights and white racing stripes. Color was extremely important for the overall character of the space, and helped to create fluidity throughout the space, such as the strategically placed racing stripes that appear to be “racing” one another.
The open plan of non-hierarchical workspace fosters interaction and collegiality—not even the CEO has a private office. The space also includes formal and informal meeting areas, multiple break areas, and a game room. The “Great Room” provides a central gathering place for all-hands meetings and special events.
The headquarters has become a valuable tool for Edmunds.com to attract and retain a high level of talent.
