STUDIOS provided master planning and design for this 6-building campus for Marconi Communications, a leading British telecommunications company. The site, located in the hills north of Pittsburgh, is relatively isolated and employees typically remain on the grounds throughout the workday. As a result, it was important to create a sense of community on the campus and provide staff with easy access to amenities such as dining and fitness facilities.
The design emphasizes circulation and incorporates interior and exterior common areas to encourage interaction between employees. Open stair lobbies allow for visual connections between floors, and enclosed pedestrian links encourage travel between the buildings.
The first phase of this project included three 2-story buildings featuring office, research and development, and light assembly space, as well as a large, multi-purpose dining facility and parking for 1,000 employees. The second phase included a manufacturing/assembly building and two additional research and development buildings with a ground-level fitness center.
Building 5 stands at the heart of the complex and functions as the “campus commons,” providing amenities such as a fitness center. The building faces out on a sunny green and nearby basketball court.
