First look: Two apartment towers bound for South Downtown

Newport RE tapped STUDIOS to work with them on the first residential elements to their larger master plan to redevelop the South Downtown area of Atlanta. The project consists of two residential buildings flanking Broad Street, a major thoroughfare slated for increased transit connection.

Each site has a mix of existing buildings and STUDIOS’ design strategy seeks to maintain the contextual base and height of the existing and then float the two towers above that datum. The new facades take inspiration from the existing context and also play off of each other—as do their forms. Each residential tower takes on a canted bar shape, to take advantage of a simple double-loaded corridor design while providing views in all directions.
