CuDC’s vision for its gallery depended on mobility to break down the barriers to art too often found in traditional presentation venues. Traveling to all eight wards of DC, the Mobile Art Gallery has already received more visitors in its two years than the original gallery received in fifteen.
A blank canvas.
The design team envisioned an endlessly adaptable, self-sufficient vessel inside a compact footprint. The space would be completely transformed by artists into immersive environments.
“As a reflexive, intimate space, the Mobile Art Gallery gives me the ability to refect the attitudes and lives of the community the gallery inhabits.”
Amanda Burnham - Artist
Activating unexpected places.
With each change of location, the Mobile Art Gallery has hosted workshops, lectures, and community engagements, demonstrating the ability for innovative, provocative art to cut across cultural, social, and economic boundaries. Offering residents of the nation’s capital direct access to unique creative experiences, high quality art arrives at the center of each destination community. By bringing its installations directly to the public, the Gallery serves as the District’s catalyst for conversations beyond the art in its container.
A community beacon.
The Mobile Art Gallery embraces the notion that design can reveal the world to our citizens and vice versa. The gallery continues to thrive, bringing new exhibitions and cultural experiences to DC residents and beyond, bridging new relationships across communities. A simple shipping container has become an important cultural beacon.
