In a recent piece for FacilitiesNet, San Francisco Managing Principal Jason McCarthy discusses all-electric, high-performance buildings.

The article explores how sustainable design can not only reduce carbon emissions—a significant contributor to global warming—but also be a cost-effective choice for institutions in the long run.

“For many building owners and developers, there is a perception that being green still feels overwhelming or simply too expensive, but it’s more within reach than many might think,” McCarthy remarks. “For new construction, all-electric building design represents one of the most promising avenues for a greener building.”

Two recent STUDIOS projects, the City of Fremont Downtown Event Center and The Hub at Stanford Research Park, are all-electric designs that utilize various strategies including building orientation, a high-performance envelope, and high-efficiency mechanical systems. Both projects also include rooftop photovoltaic panel arrays to bring them closer to Net Zero Energy.
