The new high-performance office building, complimented by parking, outdoor recreation space, and nearby housing, creates a new Garden District for the City of Mountain View.

The Office Building and Parking Structure at 675 Middlefield are part of a new mixed-use project in the City of Mountain View in the heart of East Whisman. The vision of the development is to create a Garden District by integrating a network of landscaped, human-centric outdoor spaces complimented by the design of the new buildings.

The office portion of the project provides employment opportunities within a 6-story office building that frames the Privately-Owned Publicly-Accessible (POPA) park and anchors the northwest corner of the development at the East Middlefield Road and Logue Avenue intersection. The building will house 277,600 gross square feet of office space complimented by 8,500 square feet of elevated terraces on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th floors, which will serve as tenant amenity spaces. The terraces serve as massing breaks to reduce the overall scale of the building, while activating the facade at the busy intersection and creating a biophilic connection to the green space. Supporting the office building is an adjacent parking structure offering 638 parking spaces in an 8-1/2 level garage. A connecting plaza provides a place for gathering, recreation, and relaxation for pedestrians going to and from their place of business.

The design of the buildings responds to the large, open, public green spaces that are woven through the site, enhancing the proposed garden district. The prominent, full-height building entrance portal welcomes tenants, guests, and passing pedestrians. At levels one and two, the facade appears to pull up from the ground to reveal a much lighter, transparent glass enclosure offering tenants views of the surrounding fragrance garden and nearby park. A series of private outdoor deck spaces serve to articulate and reduce the massing of the building, while extending the surrounding green space vertically.

Targeting LEED Platinum, the new office building offers a healthy environment for staff and guests. The mass timber structure gives the office a lower carbon footprint than other facilities of similar size. Views, natural light, and indoor-outdoor connections have been prioritized with extensive glazing and outdoor work areas ranging from terraces to a stepped outdoor courtyard. Photovoltaics will cover all available roof area of the office building with an estimated 475,900 kWh per year produced.

Stepped, landscaped seating offers a space for relaxation and socialization for tenants or passing pedestrians.

The screened parking garage sits adjacent to the office building supporting both workers and visitors. Vertical, architectural mesh panels in shades of green make up the primary screening element on all four sides of the structure. Panel end points shift slightly to give the screen a curtain-like appearance. Planters of hanging vines are thoughtfully composed to break up the repetition of the panels, while adding color and texture, pulling the garden district vision vertically up the façade.
