STUDIOS and MPFP continue their ongoing collaboration with the New York Athletic Club, advancing the Masterplan they developed for Travers Island in 2025. A part of the first phase, commencing September 2026, involves the demolition of the existing pool cabanas to make way for a redesigned pool complex featuring upgraded amenities including lounge, changing, and locker rooms and a terraced pool deck, as well as new programming such as dedicated gaming areas.
The design of the new pool complex takes inspiration from the overall campus—utilizing brick, board and batten and cedar siding—while remaining visually distinct in scale. The massing of the building supports intuitive wayfinding as the main entry and retail volume asserts itself as the anchor from the parking lot entrance and directly adjacent to the Clubhouse. The L-shaped building then extends around toward the river with distinct areas for family changing, adult changing, and a lounge.
The new covered veranda wraps around a portion of the complex facing the lawn and olympic-sized pool beyond. The veranda is constructed of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), a material selected not only for its sustainability credentials, but for its rapid-assembly advantages. This is particularly well-suited to the project's phased construction approach, which is designed to minimize disruption to the Club during peak seasons.
Master Planning
The master plan serves as a road map for Travers Island’s future to improve the existing facilities and will be the foundation for development throughout the next decades. It identifies crucial projects needing immediate attention while uncovering new projects for the following years. The master plan ensures facilities and services are optimized over time to create a sustainable environment and promote growth. Upgraded facilities will allow NYAC Travers Island to provide members with improved programming and activities ranging from athletics, wellness, food and beverage, and youth programming. Optimizing operations will ensure Travers Island creates a satisfying member experience, and enhanced programming will create new revenue opportunities.
